چکیده
Potentially this paper contains some results that may be of interest to NPG, but not in its present form. The main issue is that the authors describe the method of Lagrangian descriptors in a variety of misleading and wrong ways, and they also have neglected to mention a large amount of relevant literature. The authors develop a new Lagrangian descriptor based on integrating the magnitude of the vorticity (an Eulerian quantity) along trajectories. They claim this is a new “Eulerian-Lagrangian descriptor”. However, their approach follows exactly the methodology for Lagrangian descriptors described in the following paper:

Interactive comment on “Detecting and tracking eddies in oceanic flow fields: A vorticity based Euler-Lagrangian method” by R. Vortmeyer-Kley et al
The authors consider the classical problem of detecting and tracking eddies in flow fields (in the title the adjective ’oceanic’ is present, but the paper is about kinematic flows). To do so they develop a variant, vorticity-based, of the so-called ’Lagrangian descriptors’, and evaluate it in model kinematic flows, as compared with other Lagrangian and Eulerian methodologies. There is some inte...

Direct Numerical Simulation of the Wake Flow Behind a Cylinder Using Random Vortex Method in Medium to High Reynolds Numbers
Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow behind a cylinder, wake flow, using the random vortex method for an incompressible fluid in two dimensions is presented. In the random vortex method, the primary variable is vorticity of the flow field. After generation on the cylinder wall, it is followed in two fractional time step in a Lagrangian system of coordinates, namely convection and diffu...

∇x · u = 0 (x ∈ R , t ≥ 0) u(x, 0) = u(x) (x ∈ R) with u a given, smooth, divergence-free, rapidly decreasing vector field on R. Here, u(x, t) and p(x, t) are the unknown velocity and pressure for an ideal, incompressible fluid flow at zero viscosity. An outstanding open problem is to determine whether a 3D Euler solution can develop a singularity at a finite time T . A classic result of Beale-...
متن کاملEuler-Lagrange equations and geometric mechanics on Lie groups with potential
Abstract. Let G be a Banach Lie group modeled on the Banach space, possibly infinite dimensional, E. In this paper first we introduce Euler-Lagrange equations on the Lie group G with potential and right invariant metric. Euler-Lagrange equations are natural extensions of the geodesic equations on manifolds and Lie groups. In the second part, we study the geometry of the mechanical system of a r...
